- Flu Vaccination Campaign
Recently, Frivatti Genetic and Agro launched an important vaccination campaign for all their employees, aiming to immunize them against the Influenza virus, reaffirming their commitment to collective health and social responsibility. Does human flu immunization also protect pigs and farms? Due to certain biological similarities, pigs are also susceptible to the flu virus. This factor can negatively affect the entire swine production, as the Influenza virus is highly mutable and unpredictable in its mutations. An outbreak of flu in a farm can result in significant productivity losses, impacting animal health and business efficiency. This initiative reflects the company's commitment to public health and the sustainability of its operations, highlighting that immunization is not just an act of individual care, but a collective effort to protect all employees and animals, thus ensuring the continuity and quality of swine production. - Swine farming phases: From maternity to finishing
Swine farming involves various crucial stages for the healthy development and growth of pigs, from birth to the finishing phase. Each phase of the rearing process plays a vital role in determining the final quality of pork products, directly impacting the profitability and efficiency of the operation. Understanding the different phases of swine farming, from maternity to finishing, is essential for producers to ensure animal welfare, herd health, and food safety. Maternity: The maternity division oversees the reproduction, maternity, and weaning of piglets. Piglets spend approximately 21 to 28 days in the Weaner Production Unit (WPU) after birth. Gestation lasts approximately 114 days, equivalent to 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days. The process involves transferring females to the maternity sector 5 to 7 days before the expected delivery date to acclimate to the environment. After birth, care for newborns includes cleaning their mouth, nose, and body to remove fetal membranes. If necessary, assisting piglets in their first nursing ensures colostrum consumption for passive immunity, as colostrum is a source of active immunoglobulins. Nursery: The nursery section is responsible for the initial care of the animals. Piglets enter this phase after weaning, weighing 8 kg, and remain for 42 days until they reach a minimum average of 20 kg each. They leave the nursery at an average age of 64 days. Weaning weight directly influences the future performance of piglets, as those weaned at higher weights show better performance in the nursery and subsequently greater growth. It is important to avoid mixing more than three different litters in a batch to minimize conflicts. However, to reduce stress and prevent stereotypical behaviors, environmental enrichment with straw or chains is an alternative, providing a suitable environment for animals to express their behavior and promoting animal welfare. Good practices in this phase include gentle handling of animals, keeping them separated by sex or weight to avoid hierarchy issues, and ensuring greater uniformity in the batch. In the first fifteen days, it is essential to rigorously control the temperature, maintaining it between 26°C and 30°C through curtain management, heaters with bells, or lamps, which is crucial for thermal comfort and air renewal, directly affecting performance and final weight of the animals. Finishing: The finishing phase is responsible for fattening the animals from exiting the nursery until the slaughter phase, with a final live weight between 100 and 120 kg. Pigs enter the finishing phase with an average age of 63 days and exit after 114 days of housing. Finishing is divided into two phases: rearing, where absorbed nutrients are allocated to growth and lean meat deposition, and the final phase until they reach the slaughter weight. To ensure proper sanitary management, pens should be cleaned daily, aiming for dryness and scraping, targeting animal health and welfare. In all rearing phases, biosecurity measures, prophylactic management, and animal welfare practices should be implemented to ensure the quality of the final product and food safety. One way to ensure efficiency and food safety in this production process is through traceability in the production chain.

- Proper handling in swine transportation
Swine transportation is a crucial step in the production chain, but it is also an extremely stressful and high-risk moment for the pig. Maintaining the animals' health during transportation is essential to ensure the quality of the final product and prevent the spread of diseases. Let's explore some best practices that should be adopted to ensure that pigs are transported safely. A major issue that animal transportation faces is regarding biosecurity, which involves a set of measures aimed at preventing the entry and spread of diseases among swine. Animals that were previously confined and protected from the external world are now in contact with it. One of the first steps to ensure the animals' safety is the decontamination of the trucks used in transportation. It is important to adopt the stance that every truck is potentially contaminated. Therefore, it is essential for trucks to undergo a rigorous disinfection process before being used to transport swine. During transportation, it is crucial to keep the truck isolated from domestic and wild animals and possible disease vectors, as well as from people who are not directly involved in the operation. Additionally, the vehicle should be kept away from the animals' feed and from equipment that may be contaminated, in order to prevent the spread of pathogens. During the loading of the animals, the loading dock plays a fundamental role in ensuring biosecurity. It should be designed to prevent contaminations from external vectors and facilitate the pigs' movement safely and efficiently. The loading dock should be covered and built with materials that facilitate cleaning and disinfection. Moreover, there should be a hose for cleaning, with adequate spaces for water drainage during the washing of the area. In summary, ensuring biosecurity in swine transportation requires the implementation of a series of rigorous measures, from the disinfection of trucks to proper handling during the loading of animals. By adopting these practices, producers contribute to disease prevention and promote swine health, thus ensuring the quality of the final products and the sustainability of the swine production chain.
- The importance of feed conversion ratio (FCR) for profitability in swine farming
Feed conversion ratio plays a crucial role in the profitability of a swine farming operation. This indicator measures the efficiency with which pigs convert the consumed feed into body weight. Here's an analysis of its specific importance for swine farming: Cost reduction: Efficient feed conversion in swine farming means less feed is required to produce each kilogram of body weight in pigs. This results in lower feeding costs, contributing to the overall reduction of production costs. Effective management of feed conversion is essential for maintaining the profitability of the swine farm. Profit maximization: With optimized feed conversion, swine producers can maximize their profits. By reducing feeding costs, a larger proportion of the revenue generated from pig sales becomes net profit. This is crucial for ensuring the long-term economic viability of the swine farming operation. Efficient resource utilization: Efficient feed conversion not only benefits the farm's economy but also promotes environmental sustainability. Lower feed consumption means less pressure on natural resources such as grains and water, as well as reducing the carbon footprint of swine production. Swine health and welfare: Efficient feed conversion is directly linked to the health and welfare of pigs. Healthy and well-cared-for animals have better utilization of nutrients from the feed, contributing to more efficient feed conversion. This not only improves production outcomes but also reduces the need for veterinary treatments and medications, saving additional costs. Meat quality: Efficient feed conversion can positively influence the quality of produced pork. Well-fed and healthy pigs tend to produce higher-quality meat, with characteristics such as proper marbling and lower fat content. This not only increases consumer satisfaction but can also enable higher prices in the market, further enhancing the profitability of the swine farm. In summary, feed conversion is a fundamental aspect of swine production that directly influences costs, profits, environmental sustainability, animal health, and the quality of the final product. Swine producers who prioritize feed conversion optimization are in a better position to ensure the economic and operational success of their farms.
